Woohoo!

2004 is here, and the workload shows no sign of stopping. If I didn’t enjoy my job I’m not sure what I’d do. But another piece of good news is that my group is increasing by 50%! Erik will add much web-fu, which will help us immensely in our fight to triumph over Evil(tm). (And by triumphing over Evil, I mean putting together web-based user-interfaces and thinking up apps and other cool stuff)

One serious problem that our group has to deal with, however, is the increasing reliance by other groups on us as the “go-to” guys. It’s great that we can help out everyone when they run into problems, but it’s getting to the point that it’s seriously interfering with our ability to complete our own tasks. How much work did I get done that directly related to tasks for our group today?

ZERO. zippy. nada. zilch. Why? Well, let’s see…. Customer delivery questions. Training needed us to demonstrate an app that wasn’t installed anywhere, so we had to prep a box and get everything running first, which took over an hour to get everything just so….then demo it for an hour…. random architecture-related questions on upcoming release features…

Yes, I’m ranting again. I really need to stop doing that. I’ll do another entry now that doesn’t have anything to do with work.

Of COURSE you’re ranting, it’s a blog. Does it REALLY exist for any other purpose?

Borrowing DougM’s (yet another GALT-onian whom you just missed meeting) comment about personal homepages: “[Blogs] are just masturbation.” They exist primarily for the self-gratification of the author.

Occasionally, they provide something useful for others, but let’s not take this metaphor too far…
